The Faculty of Science and Engineering undertakes a broad range of research and teaching activities at the highest national and international level, consistently ranking highly on the global stage. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across a diverse range of disciplines. The faculty is home to world-class research centres including the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology, ARC Training Centre for Facilitated Advancement of Australia’s Bioactives among others.
Macquarie University hosts the Australian Harmony Centre for Ecosystem Futures, and is the only Australian institution to chair a United Nations Academic Hub for Sustainable Development Goals: UNAI SDG Hub 15 – Life on Land. The faculty is home to passionate staff and engaged students dedicated to the advancement of science and engineering, including 9400 coursework students and more than 600 graduate research students. The faculty employs more than 650 staff, comprising academic, professional and technical staff, and operates with a budget of about $175 million, including $50 million in Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) income.
Who we are looking for
The Executive Dean provides strategic leadership and management of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The position leads the faculty with other senior academic and professional staff within the faculty. As a member of the Executive Group, the Executive Dean is a leader across the University and is called upon to share in stewardship of the University’s purpose, vision and values.
We are looking for an energetic leader who will inspire and engage the scientific and engineering academic community to achieve ambition and innovative goals in research, industry engagement, and teaching and learning. We seek to appoint an Executive Dean who has a substantial leadership career in academia and/or industry.
Key focuses of the role will include accelerating how our education programs transform the lives of students, and enhancing our performance in research, especially the University’s articulation with a wide array of external organisations.
Your modelling of core academic and University values, your future-focused leadership and ability to inspire teams while fostering innovation and excellence will enable you to succeed in this role.
What you will do
• Develop and lead implementation of strategies aimed at: – improving research performance and research quality, capacity and capability within the faculty, particularly through accelerating interaction with industry partners – maximising research funding streams and collaborations within the faculty and across the University – increasing learning and teaching quality, innovation and capability within the faculty – aligning student numbers with targets and strategies agreed to with the University – developing deep, productive and strategic local, national and international partnerships – increasing/ensuring efficiency of enabling services with due regard to the balance between central and devolved functions – enhancing the student experience across all aspects of the faculty’s operations.
• Ensure strategies developed within the faculty align with University-wide strategies for use of resources, the commercial context and the University’s culture and aspirations. • Collaborate closely with all other members of the Executive Group in accordance with the agreed Executive Charter to develop the University’s vision and oversee the implementation of University-wide strategy. • Foster a culture of collaboration and shared vision in alignment with the University. • Manage, coach and set the direction for the leadership team within the faculty. • Manage the performance and development of faculty staff to build a culture of high performance and engagement. • Initiate, build and manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. • Maintain and expand key industry partnerships. • Comply with relevant equal opportunity and work health and safety regulations. • Perform any other duties as required and as appropriate for the incumbent’s level of competence.
